Luis Sierra Muntané
I’m a PhD Student in Statistical Sciences at the University of Toronto, where I am fortunate to be advised by Elena Tuzhilina. My research focuses on High-Dimensional Statistics, Tensors, and Convex Optimization. I build methods that find patterns in noisy systems with many variables..
Before joining UofT, I graduated with a double degree in Mathematics and Data Science from UPC supported by a CFIS scholarship, during which I had the great opportunity of working at the University of Toronto under a CFIS international mobility scholarship with Piotr Zwiernik. I also received a Master’s in Applied Mathematics from UPC while working with the research group INTERACT, advised by Ariadna Quattoni.

Research
Broadly, I’m interested in the intersection of statistical methods, commutative algebra, and geometric tools. Current projects include:
-
Tensors in Algebraic Statistics
How does a deeper understanding of tensor geometry allow for an understanding and methods in Algebraic Statistics.
-
Degrees of freedom in matrix completion problems
Are all entries in a matrix equally important? How do different methods affect the geometry of solutions in matrix approximations?
-
Recovering discrete spectra in random matrices
Old problems, modern approaches.
-
Open to collaborations
If you’d like to collaborate or just talk about research, don't hesitate to reach out!
